Who I am – Mia de Béthune Ph.D, ATR-BC, LCAT, ISP/SE

I’m an artist, writer, and art therapy educator, at NYU and The School of Visual Arts, with 23 years of experience as an art therapist working with youth in foster care and hospice and palliative care in the New York City metro area. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I trained in Somatic Experiencing and have been expanding my embodied practice into art therapy and beyond.

For twenty years I have been a reiki master in the Usui and Transcendental traditions. I have since trained in Holy Fire® Karuna® Reiki as well as Integral Somatic Psychology, Polarity Therapy, Embodied Meditation, Inner Relationship Focusing, and Integrative Attachment Family Therapy. I have also sought out and trained in art therapy methods that incorporate the body like Cornelia Elbrecht’s Guided Drawing, Laury Rappaport’s Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy, and Johanna Hamel’s Somatic Art Therapy. My doctoral research, at Lesley University, examined the role of embodiment in art therapy and I now teach embodied art therapy methods online as well as at The School of Visual Arts in NYC. My book, The Embodied Art Therapist was published in 2026 from Routledge, and was co-edited by Kelley Linhardt and Valeria Koutmina with 22 other authors.

A new focus for me has been Core Centering and a turn toward somatic coaching which will be less trauma-focused than my clinical practice. With OGT Daily Somatics, I hope to offer somatic and creative strategies for managing life in meaningful and practical ways. These will incorporate reiki as well somatic touch table work along with Core Centering training and expressive arts.

As always, I continue to make art and to write. For me art takes the form of drawing, collage, painting and woven sculptures. You can see more of my writing in my Substack – The OGT Daily.

I am a licensed creative arts therapist in NY State and a nationally registered art therapist, but practice as a somatic and creative coach online and in person in New York as well as Rhode Island.
